Special Stitch: long Half Double Crochet (LHDC): YO, insert hook in space indicated (which will be one row below row you are working on), draw up a loop even with current row. YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook. LHDC made.

Ch 30
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (29 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in same st. *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st* Repeat * across.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in same st. *LHDC in skipped sc of previous row, sc in next st* Repeat * across.
Rows 4-9: Repeat rows 2 and 3 three times for rows 4-9.
Row 10: Sl st in next 6 stitches, In 6th st, ch 1, sc in same st. *ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st* repeat *across leaving last FIVE st unworked.
Row 11: Ch 1 turn. Sc in same st, *LHDC in next st, sc in next st* Repeat * across. (19 stitches)
Row 12: Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc, now and throughout), turn. Work hdc in BLO of each stitch across (19 hdc).
Row 13: Ch 2, turn. HDC in BLO of each stitch across and ch 2. (19 hdc)
Rows 14 and 15: Repeat row 13
Row 16: Ch 1, turn. Sc in same st and next st. *In next st work (sc-hdc-sc), sc in next 2 stitches* Repeat * across. Sc in last ch 2. Finish off, leaving long tail for sewing.
Finishing: Fold bootie in half and evenly stitch together. Roll down 1st 2 rows to make rim. Weave in all ends.
HAT:
Ch 5, join to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc now and througout) 11 hdc in ring. Join to 1st hdc. (12 hdc)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st. Work 2 hdc in each st around. Join to 1st hdc. (24 hdc)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st* Repeat * around. Join with a sl st to 1st hdc (36 hdc)
Rnd 4: ch 2, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next 2 stitches, 2hdc in next st* Repeat * around. Join to 1st hdc (48 hdc)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 1, skip next sc. *sc in next st, ch 1, skip next st* repeat * around. Join with sl st to 1st sc.
Rnd 6: Ch 1, TURN, sc in same st, LHDC in next st. *sc in next st, LHDC in next st* Repeat * around. Join with a sl st to 1st sc.

For boy, Finish off here, weave in ends and fold over last row for brim.
For girl:
Rnd 19: ch 1, sc in same st and next st. In next st work: (sc-hdc-sc). *sc in next 2 stitches, work (sc-hdc-sc) in next st* repeat * around. Join with sl st to 1st sc. Finish off and weave in ends.
