With dark green and I hook, ch 60
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and each ch across. (58 dc)
Row 2: ch 1, turn, (sc-hdc-dc) in same st, skip next two st. *(sc-hdc-dc) in next st, skip next 2 st. Repeat * across, sc in top of ch 3 from previous row.
Row 3: ch 1, turn, (sc-hdc-dc) in same st, skip next two st. *(sc-hdc-dc) in next st, skip next 2 st. Repeat * across, sc in last st.
Row 4: Ch3, turn. Dc in next st and each st across. (58 dc).
Repeat rows 2-4 until piece measures about 10 inches. Finish off and weave in ends.
Edging:
Rnd 1: Join Red with sl st in any st of top row of placemat. Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), HDC in next st and evenly around entire piece working 3 hdc in each corner. Join with a sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch 2.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, (sc-hdc-dc) in same st, skip next 2 st. *(sc-hdc-dc) in next st, sk next 2 st* Repeat * around. Join with a sl st to 1st sc. Finish off and weave in ends.
APPLE: With Red and size H hook, ch 8.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. (7 sc)
Row 2: ch 1, turn. 2 sc in same st, sc in next 5 st, 2 sc in last st. (9 sc)
Row 3: ch 1, turn. 2 sc in same st, sc in next 7 st, 2 sc in last st. (11 sc)
Row 4: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in same st, sc in next 9 st, 2 sc in last st. (13 sc)
Row 5: ch 1 turn, sc in same st and each st across (13 sc)
Rows 6-13: Repeat row 5.
Row 14: ch 1, turn, sc dec over next 2 st, sc next 9 st, sc dec over next 2 st (11 sc)
Row 15: ch 1, turn, sc dec over next 2 st, sc next 7 st, sc dec over next 2 st (9 sc)
Row 16: ch 1, turn, sc dec over next 2 st, sc next st, sl st next 3 st, sc next st, sc dec over next 2 st. Finish off red.
Row 17: Join green with a sl st one row below the three skipped sl st of row 16 on the right of the apple. Ch 1 sc in same st. Ch 7: sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc next ch, dc next 3 ch, sc next ch. SC in next 2 st (again working one row below the sl st of row 16). Ch 7: sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc next ch, dc next 3 ch, sc next ch. Join with a sl st to last sc that was worked in row 16. Finish off and leave a long tail.
Using tail, tack down leaf on right side to apple (use photo for reference.) I also used this tail to weave the bottom of the two leaves together a little bit, but that is optional.
Sew apple to upper right hand corner of placemat.
